Ranting #2

So, today I'm gonna take a small break from working on Gintama and just take some time to rant. Something that I've noticed is that allot off fansubbers are taking donations. And by that I mean that they ask you to send them money so that they can buy stuff that they need, stuff such as a seed server, encoding server, hosting server, really they need all kinds of servers... But not just servers, sometimes they'll ask you for a few bucks so that they can buy a DVD or BD that hasn't shown up on the internet yet.

Well that isn't illegal, you say? No, it isn't. Well is it unethical, you ask?
Not really, its not like fansubbers are doctors or anything like that. So why the ranting, you ask?
Well, it might not be illegal or unethical but some off it sure is wrong if you ask me. Asking your fans if they want to give you 20$ so you can buy a certain volume of a certain show isn't really wrong in my opinion, since you're asking them for help to provide them with something that they wouldn't have or get otherwise. But asking for money so that you can buy a server to seed/encode with, now thats just wrong. You're not giving them something that they wouldn't have access too otherwise.
You were able to seed your stuff without that new server just fine before, and you encoded your releases without a server just fine before.
Basically, you're just asking people to give you money so that you might be able to give them their anime faster. Because we all know that things don't work out as planned. Things get delayed and sure they would have been delayed even without the server, but at-least people didn't give you any of their hard earn money.
I've seen sites asking for as much as 100$ per month. Some might say thats not allot of money. But apparently it is, since the people asking for it doesn't have it themselves. Now a group made out of 8 members or more should be able to pay it themselves if they all chip in, since they are the ones that are asking for it.
But in the end, isn't the fault somewhat ours too? I mean, apparently we keep giving them money every month, or they wouldn't keep asking for more. We really need to stop doing that, giving people money so that they can buy things that they didn't really need in the first place. And that's my two cents, and I'll be keeping them for myself!
